STUDENT CAS PROJECT

In June this year, IBS student, Laura SMITHSON, travelled to Sierra Leone in West Africa to teach at a small rural school as part of her CAS requirement. The school, Kankaylay Primary School, lies seven hours outside of Freetown and comprises 3 classrooms accommodating 40-50 pupils who ranged in age from 3 to 16 years old.

Before Laura left Aix-en-Provence, she did a book drive to collect second hand books which would be relevant to children under 12 years old. “There was a tremendous response from the IBS students and parents and I was able to take a full box of books which I handed over to the school. I also took pencils and writing books for each child.”

Laura intends to return in 2013 for 2 months to help out and continue teaching. She is keen to involve other students if they are interested especially in collecting materials such as books, charts and other learning equipment.
