Bridges of Toothpicks: IBS Engineering Challenge Crowns Champions

The IBS Engineering Challenge recently concluded, leaving participants and spectators alike impressed by the ingenuity and skill displayed. This year's challenge tasked students with constructing bridges using only toothpicks and wood glue, adhering to a strict set of regulations. The ultimate goal: to achieve the highest load-to-weight ratio, demonstrating both structural strength and lightweight design.

The competition was fierce, with students meticulously crafting their bridges, pushing the boundaries of what could be achieved with such simple materials. After rigorous testing, the results were announced, showcasing the remarkable talent within our student body.

A resounding congratulations goes to our joint winners, Charlotte Vandevelde and Carmen Welzbacher, whose collaborative effort resulted in a bridge that perfectly balanced strength and lightness. Their achievement earned them a well-deserved 30€ Cultura voucher.

Following closely behind, Andrei Stanet secured second place, demonstrating exceptional engineering prowess.

Jack Ubbels claimed third place, showcasing his own impressive design.

Beyond the top three, the challenge highlighted other outstanding achievements: Erin Goerres received a special mention for her bridge's unique and innovative design, demonstrating a remarkable level of originality. Equally noteworthy was Antonio Becerra Fernandez, whose bridge astounded everyone by holding a staggering 17.5kg. While ultimately not winning due to its weight, this feat showcased incredible structural integrity and strength.

We commend all participants for their hard work and dedication. The success of this challenge underscores the importance of practical, engaging learning experiences and we look forward to seeing what our students will accomplish in future engineering endeavors!

Many thanks to Mr. Bruce for creating such an engaging and educational experience for our students.
